Michel De Dobbeleer (1978) is a Slavist, Classicist and Italianist. His PhD dissertation (Ghent University, 2012) dealt with medieval Slavic accounts of the 1453 fall of Constantinople. He has published about, a.o., pre- and early modern epic poetry, Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope concept, West European histories of Slavic literature, ‘transnational mentions’ in literary histories, comics adaptations of Slavic literary classics, (Post-)Yugoslav and Bulgarian comics, Flemish children’s comics, the representation of the Balkans in Franco-Belgian comics, the translation/reception of Dutch and Flemish literature in East-Central Europe and Russia, and (as part of the SESDiva project) cultural connections between East and South Slavs. Since 2019 he has been editing and writing many posts in Dutch and English for the Balkan blog Kibik.
In academia (Ghent University [2005-] & KU Leuven [2022-2024]) he has taught (overview) courses on Russian literature and history, on medieval Slavic language, literature and art history, and on East-Central European literatures and cultures. At KU Leuven, he also led translation workshops (Russian to Dutch). Outside academia he has been preparing and teaching introductory Russian language and Balkan and Russian history courses in Flemish secondary schools and adult education. In 2007, he co-adapted a Bulgarian language course. Occasionally, he does translation work (into Dutch or English).
