On Thursday 23 March at 3pm, Emily Apter (New York University) will deliver the CETRA/CERES Fall Lecture 2023 on “Translating Injustice: The Problem of Speech Unfreedom in Claudia Rankine’s Just Us.” The event is organized in collaboration with the Research Group English Literature@KU Leuven.

For those of you working in the fields of World Literature and/or Translation Studies, Emily Apter needs no introduction. She is the author of The Translation Zone: A New Comparative Literature (Princeton UP, 2006) and Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability (Verso, 2013), and was co-editor of theDictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon (Princeton UP, 2015). Her new book project is entitledTranslating in-Equality: Equivalence, Justness, Rightness, Equaliberty.

The lecture will take place at the Brussels Campus (Stormstraat 2, 1000 Brussels) in room 6306.

The conference “Translation and the Periodical” will be hosted from 13-15 September 2023 at Ghent University in Belgium. It will start with a postgraduate workshop on 13 September, followed by the main conference on 14 and 15 September.

On Tuesday 7 March Matthew Reynolds, Professor of English and Comparative Criticism at the University of Oxford, will give a public lecture entitled “Prismatic Translation” at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He will be welcomed by Sonja Janssens (École de Traduction et Interprétation ISTI – Cooremans).

The Prismatic approach considers translation, not as the production of one translated text from one source text, but as a process that inevitably generates many translated texts (both actual and potential) which need to be considered together. In this talk, Matthew Reynolds (Professor of English and Comparative Criticism at the University of Oxford) will outline the theory, and then present an example: the collaborative Prismatic Jane Eyre project, which studies Charlotte Brontë’s novel as it co-exists in around 600 translations, into at least 68 languages.  How can we set about reading this plural, global, transtemporal and multilingual text? – and why should we?

The lecture will take place at 6.00 pm at the Université libre de Bruxelles (Campus du Solbosch) in room UD6.215 (building U, entrance C, 6th floor). It will be followed by a drink. The event is free but registration is required.

In collaboration with Letterenhuis, CLIV is organizing a two-part event on translator archives. During a webinar on 25 February 2022, literary translators will talk about their own documentation process and archive and there will be lectures on the collection, preservation, accessibility and research of translator archives in Flanders and the Netherlands. In a follow-up workshop on May 6 and May 23 at the Letterenhuis in Antwerp, we will focus on archival care for literary translator archives.
